TWELVE

After walking Kress to his class, Sennica made her way to the nurse’s station to meet with Dr. Jorga.

The glow she felt from last night had almost pushed this whole ordeal out of her mind. It wasn’t until Kress asked her about it on the way to class that she was reminded of what she had to do. Fortunately, Dr. Jorga had been waiting patiently for her message.

“What happened to your eye?”

Sennica touched her eye. She spent all her free time this morning with Kress, forcing her to forgo putting on makeup to hide her purple eye.

“Oh, it was just an accident.”

Dr. Jorga watched her intensely. “I hope your boyfriend didn’t do this.”

“No, no, I swear! I hit myself against the corner of my roommate’s bed.” Sennica left out the details of how she got there.

Dr. Jorga continued staring. “You’re safe to tell me the truth.”

Sennica laughed. “I swear! Trust me, I wouldn’t stay with an asshole who did that to me.”

Dr. Jorga nodded and continued. She pointed to the table. “Get undressed.”

Sennica did as she said and reclined on the table.

“I thought it took a while between having sex and getting pregnant,” Sennica asked, trying to ignore that Dr. Jorga was sticking a cold, metal tool somewhere deeply uncomfortable.

“For regular human pregnancies, yes. But you’re already pregnant. The rapcimites work fast. If they see DNA, they absorb it. It’s like food to them. Okay, I’m done.” She pulled the tool out and cleaned it.

Sennica put her clothes back on. “How long will it take?”

“Shouldn’t take long.” Dr. Jorga bottled up the sample and wrote something on the label. “I’ll go to the lab and start analyzing the DNA immediately.”

“Is there anything I can do in the meantime?”

“No, just make sure to tell me if you feel any different. Moraley was already started to feel sick by this point. She was coughing nauseous—” Dr. Jorga stopped in her tracks as she stared at Sennica with an awe-struck look.

“What is it?”

“Your eye.”

Sennica touched her eye. It had stopped hurting moments after she hurt herself so she had no way to gauge how bad it was.

“What’s wrong with it?” A sense of panic fluttered in her belly.

“Nothing. The bruising, the swelling… it’s gone.” Dr. Jorga grabbed a nearby mirror and held it up. Sennica looked at her reflection. Not only did her eye look completely normal, but a scar she got hover-boarding as a child was almost completely gone too.

“Wow, I look great!”

Dr. Jorga put the mirror down and stared at Sennica. Her brow was furrowed as the wheels turned in her head.

“The DNA from the rapcimite must have incorporated itself into your DNA too. They do have incredible healing powers. Much like certain invertebrates from Earth which were able to regenerate, rapcimites have regenerative DNA. They must have transferred over to you, allowing you to heal faster too. Interesting.”

“Interesting? Like, bad interesting? Did this happen to Dr. Mylet-Wagner?”

Dr. Jorga shook her head. “No. Moraley started deteriorating. You’re doing the opposite. Interesting.
